I needed to replace my winch cable , as it had worked very hard , especially when I had it on the Disco . I decided to go for a plasma rope instead , mainly because it is easier to work with and much safer as well . I sourced it from Bud Morris of Sunset Equipment fame.
You can read up more on plasma ropes here
And here’s a great video on splicing ropes

- The old roller fairlead needs to be replaced
- I had to remove the roller to get to the bolt
- Fortunately it’s just held in place with a circlip
- Old fairlead is off, The bolt uses a trapped nut , so it easy to get it out
- 28m rope.It is slightly thicker than the cable , so it is about 5m shorter
- The end that gets fixed onto the winch drum
- The other end is protected by a nylon sleeve
- Feed the rope through the new fairlead , but don’t attach it completely yet , as it makes it easier to get to the grub screw on the drum
- Cable attached to drum
- Spool a couple of loops to keep it in place
- Remove the winch hook from the old cable
- Attach to plasma rope
- Quite a tight fit. I needed to force it through with a hammer
- Newly spooled rope. Very easy to do because it doesn’t have to be under tension .
- Job done
